Why we won’t allow political campaigns until ASUU strike is resolved – NANS

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Nigerian students under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), have vowed to disallow candidates and their political parties from campaigning until the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is called off.

The protesting students, also threatened to hinder activities at all the nation’s public assets, including sea ports.

According to them, all these are in their effort to sustain the ongoing #EndASUUStrikeNow campaign until the Federal Government resolves issues with ASUU and students return to their campuses.

Addressing a press conference at Ogun Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, Abeokuta, on Wednesday, the Chairman, NANS National Taskforce on #EndASUUStrikeNow, Raymond Ojo, said the blocking of roads and ports is just a warning.

“If the government fails to conclude all the negotiation and agreement with ASUU within the frame of two weeks, they will witness more protests and rallies all over the country, they will also witness the annoyance, anger, and frustration of Nigerian students who have been at home for the past seven months.

“We promise them that we will not allow any political campaign to hold across the country until we are back to class,” he said.

Ojo, flanked by other student leaders, expressed concern that a lot of Nigerian students have lost a complete academic session due to what he called an “unwarranted dispute between the FG and ASUU,” adding some have lost their lives or involved in one casualty or the other due to the ASUU strike.”

NANS maintained that the ASUU strike is germane, saying the only way to save public higher institutions of learning in the nation from total collapse is to properly invest in the educational sector.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has again postponed the start of its campaigns earlier slated for Wednesday.

The director-general of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council and Governor Simon Lalong disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Lalong said the development followed the party’s decision to include more people in the campaign council.

“Recall that we had earlier earmarked a peace walk and prayers for Wednesday to officially kick off our campaigns for the 2023 presidential elections,” the statement said. “We had also announced that the members of the campaign council report at the campaign headquarters on that day to collect their letters of appointments.”

However, it said due to the expansion of the list to accommodate more stakeholders and interests within “the APC family, we have decided to adjust the timetable of these activities.”

He explained that this was to ensure that everyone was on board before activities officially commenced, adding that the activities earlier announced for September 28 would no longer hold.

Mr Lalong said as the ruling and most attractive party in Nigeria, the council understood the sacrifices and understanding of its teeming members, who were willing to volunteer themselves for this great task ahead.

He said this showed the enormous love the party members had for its candidate, Bola Tinubu.

He, however, said a new date and timetable of events would be announced soon.

Bayelsa govt reacts to Diri, Dickson reported ‘division’

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has dismissed allegations that his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, is disloyal.

The governor, in a statement issued by his aide, Dr Kola Oredipe, also denied any rift with his predecessor, Sen. Seriake Dickson.

Diri reaffirmed that he has implicit confidence in Ewhrudjakpo, describing him as a worthy partner in the governance of the state.

A group in the Bayelsa Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Bayelsa Progressive Vanguard (BPV), had on Sunday decried the activities of the deputy governor.

The group had alleged that Ewhrudjakpo was working against the interest of the governor.

In a statement signed by its leader, Erepadei Ebiowei, the BPV said it had observed with dismay that most of the actions of Ewhrujakpor were unbecoming of a deputy governor.

The group alleged that the deputy governor was running a parallel administration within the government despite the latitude he enjoyed from the governor.

It also accused Ewhrujakpor of hobnobbing and meeting with aggrieved members within the ruling party and opposition party candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Nigeria bankrupt; Buhari regime incompetent, says ex-CBN Governor Lamido Sanusi

The group called on the leadership of the PDP in the state and at the national level to probe the deputy governor.

According to the BPV, if unchecked, the deputy governor will constitute the greatest threat to the fortunes of the party in the 2023 elections.
