Good morning Nigeria, welcome to Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today Saturday, 12th February 2022.
When the 200-year-old UK Guardian reported in July 2020 that the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, imported into Nigeria from Europe was highly toxic and “dirtier” than the ones derived from illegal refineries in the Niger Delta, Nigerian authorities roundly denied the newspaper report which was based on laboratory analysis. However, the misery of the past few days have blown up the strident rebuttal in the faces of the country’s officials. The past week was highly embarrassing for Nigeria and distressing for the citizenry as the country heavily resourced in hydrocarbons, suffered the exasperating impact associated with the remediation of the importation of 170.25 million litres of adulterated fuel into the country.
The Nigeria Police Force has been directed by the Police Service Commission to conclude it’s investigation on the case involving the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari within two weeks.
The spokesman of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Friday directed that the investigation should be carried out by a different panel.
The decision was reached at the 14th plenary meeting which was chaired by retired Inspector-General of Police and Chairman of the Commission, Musiliu Smith.
The Supreme Court on Friday declared executive order 10 issued by President Muhammadu Buhari as unlawful and unconstitutional.
Naija News reports six out of the seven-member panel of the Supreme Court ruled against the executive order and gave victory to the state governors who had challenged the declaration by the President.
The apex court by its ruling has now set aside executive order 10 also known as the financial autonomy order
Presidential hopeful and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has appointed Muhammad Mahmud as his National Media Coordinator.
Naija News reports that Mahmud made this known on Thursday in an interview with reporters in Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
The Borno State indigene appreciated the former Lagos governor for his appointment as the National Coordinator, Tinubu Media Support Group.
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has tackled the Coalition of Northern Groups for describing the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu as a threat to democracy.
PANDEF on Friday said the CNG is irrational and delusional for attacking Gov. Akeredolu over his statement on the 2023 presidency which he insisted must be zoned to the south as the region won’t support any northern candidate or the party that fields a northerner.
Naija News had reported that the Ondo State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu declared that any political party that fields a northern candidate in the 2023 presidential election will lose.
Two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Friday morning clashed at the Agbado area of the Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos State.
Naija News reports that this caused pandemonium amongst residents of the area.
It was gathered that road users and passersby scampered for safety when the two factions violently engaged each other
An eyewitness told The PUNCH that gunshots were also heard during the conflict over ticket collection at the parks.
The presidency has declared that the Boko Haram terrorist group had almost taken over the entire country spreading destruction everywhere before President Muhammadu Buhari became Nigeria’s leader in 2015.
The presidency however submitted that Buhari turned things around after coming into power.
The special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina made this submission in the latest of his weekly articles titled ‘Zulum zooms in’ which was released on Thursday.
The Department of State Service (DSS) has again refused the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, a change a cloth despite a court order.
Recall that Justice Binta Nyako had on January 18,2022, ordered the DSS to allow the IPOB leader change his clothe before the next trial date.
But Nnamdi Kanu returned to the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the 19th with the same outfit, prompting and enquiry by the trial judge.
Counsel to the DSS, Labaran had claimed that the pro-Biafra activist had refused to change his clothes but he was swiftly countered by Nnamdi Kanu’s lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome, who stated that his team could not get the IPOB leader new cloths at short notice.
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed it’s North-West Zonal Congress earlier scheduled for Saturday, February 12, 2022.
In a terse statement released on Friday (today) the party’s National Working Committee said a new date will be made public in due course.
Naija News observed that the party did not state the reason for the postponement of the congress.
The Senator representing Ekiti Central in the National Assembly, Opeyemi Bamidele, has suspended his plan to dump the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement he personally signed on Friday, Bamidele also said he has shelved the plan to drag the ruling party to court over the conduct of its primary election in the state.
The former Lagos Commissioner reiterated that the primary election that produced Biodun Oyebanji as the party’s flag bearer in the upcoming governorship election is “a fraudulent and fictitious vote count”

Kidnap kingpin John Ewa paraded in Yenagoa
John Ewa, the Bayelsa born suspected kidnap kingpin, who was arrested in Abuja and alleged to be responsible for high-profile kidnappings in the State is currently being paraded alongside three members of his gang by the Bayelsa State Police Command at the Police Officers Mess, Yenagoa Bayelsa State.
It was reported that the suspected kidnap kingpin had been on the wanted list of the police for various alleged abductions in the state.
Naija News 247 gathered that the police trailed Ewa, who goes by the alias ‘Lion’, to Abuja where they nabbed him on Saturday.
The suspect, who flaunts wealth on social media, is believed to be involved in several kidnap incidents around Yenagoa, the state capital.
In a six-second clip that trended on social media at the weekend, Ewa, dressed in his pyjamas, was seen displaying few notes of foreign currency saying, “Get money for this life, hustle, hustle.”
Buhari directed us to drop Osinbajo from Tinubu’s campaign – APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said President Muhammadu Buhari, directed that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, be dropped from the Campaign Council of the party’s Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Naija News 247 had reported that Osinbajo’s name was missing from the he 422-man list realised by the Presidential Campaign Council Secretary, James Faleke, in Abuja on Friday night on Friday night.
The spokesman of the campaign, Festus Keyamo, said President Buhari asked that Osinbajo alongside Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, should not be part of the campaign council so they could focus on governance.
Keyamo disclosed this on Saturday in a statement while explaining the reason behind the decision to drop the vice president
The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to some stories making the rounds that there may be something amiss within the family of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the name of our own revered and respected Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, is not included in the list of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.”
“Nothing can be farther from the facts. For the avoidance of doubt, President Muhammadu Buhari , GCFR, is the Chairman of the Campaign Council. As a result, Mr. President has SPECIFICALLY directed that the Vice-President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha should be left out of the Campaign Council to concentrate on the governance of the country and administration of Government. As a responsible Party and Government, all the key functionaries of government cannot abandon their positions for electioneering campaigns. The APC has the mandate of the Nigerian people to administer the country on their behalf at least till May, 29, 2023, and this we intend to do with all sense of responsibility.
“We will not toe the path of those who governed the country in an irresponsible manner before us and our Party is not in total disarray like those who wish to ‘rescue’ the country, but cannot simply manage their own internal affairs.”
