The State Government of Osun has suspended the Principals of the three schools who allowed the seditious group into their school premises to campaign for Odua Nation for the students.

Osun Government dissociated the state from a group going round some public schools across the state disseminating a secession message of the Yoruba nation to students in the schools.

This was disclosed through Commissioner for education, Hon. Folorunsho Bamisayemi, on Wednesday, while reacting to a viral video which showed the group talking to the students about the plan of the Yoruba nation to secede from Nigeria,

Hon. Folorunsho Bamisayemi said the administration of Governor Oyetola was not aware and never gave consent to the group to speak with public school students in the state.

He added that the administration of Governor Oyetola frowns at any move to disunite the country, maintained that the state had never at any point in time associated with any group on what he described as a move that is capable of hindering the unity of the country.

He said, “Nigeria is one entity and will continue to remain so. The State Government of Osun never gave consent to any group to speak with students of public schools on a matter we know can cause disunity and chaos in the country.

“As a Nigerian state, we believe in the Nigerian dream. We urge every Nigerian to pray and work for Nigeria not to break up. As for those principals that allowed such a group into the premises of our schools, they will face the consequences of their actions”.

Were not commencing lectures next week – Plateau varsity ASUU

The Plateau State University Bokkos (PLASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has denied rumours that classes will start there on Monday.

According to the union, a strike that had been declared by its national body more than seven months prior is still in effect, and the strike can only be called off at the national executive’s request.

ASUU, PLASU chapter, disclosed its position on Tuesday while briefing journalists in Jos, the state capital, through its Secretary, Comrade Deme Samson.

He said, “The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Plateau State University wishes to inform the public that there was no Senate meeting that deliberated and approved October 10th, 2022, as the resumption date in preparation for the commencement of lectures.”

According to the union, “A Senate meeting was held with the approval of the National Executive Council of ASUU on 26th of September, 2022, to agree on a matter that is different from what the management decided to broadcast.

Part of the statement read: “It behoves us to call the attention of the general public and the international community on the brazen insult meted on the Nigerian students by the irresponsible administration of Buhari.

“We want Nigerian students to be ready for a grand mass action on the ASUU strike. We are clear that this government is anti-public education and this is against the yearnings of millions of students and youths.

ASUU not engaging in contempt of court by not resuming – Falana

ASUU not engaging in contempt of court by not resuming

Femi Falana, human rights advocate, says the federal government is chasing shadows over it reaction to the recent judgment of the industrial court asking striking universities lectures to resume.

On September 21, the industrial court ordered Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.

Polycarp Hamman, the judge, granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike.

Subsequently, the union filed an appeal seeking a stay of execution of the judgment.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

Over the weekend, Chris Ngige, minister of labour and productivity, warned ASUU against the consequences of contempt of court.

Reacting to Ngige’s comments, Falana, counsel to ASUU, in a statement on Monday, said ASUU did not engage in contempt of court on the recent verdict of the national industrial court.

He said the application for the leave of the court of appeal against the injunction is the same as an appeal under the rules of the court.

The human rights lawyer said ASUU cannot be accused of contempt of court because the union is seeking to appeal and stay the execution of the judgment.

“The minister is unaware that the national industrial court lacks the jurisdictional competence to intervene in the resolution of a trade dispute that has not been determined by the industrial arbitration panel,” Falana said.

“However, contrary to the claim of the Minister that the ASUU has not filed an appeal, the application for the leave of the court of appeal to appeal against the interlocutory order of injunction is deemed to be an appeal under the rules of the court of appeal.

“The application is equally accompanied by a motion for stay of execution of the said order. To that extent, the members of the ASUU cannot be accused of engaging in contempt of the order of the national industrial court in so far as they are seeking to appeal and stay the execution of the said order.

“Having exercised their constitutional right of appeal and prayed the court of appeal to stay the execution of the interlocutory order of the national industrial court pending the determination of the appeal, the members of ASUU cannot be said to have engaged in any form of contempt.

“However, instead of chasing the shadow by threatening the ASUU with contempt of court and proscription, the federal government should adopt urgent measures to end the strike that has paralysed academic activities in public universities for the past seven months.

“In particular, the federal government should take advantage of the intervention of the leadership of the house of representatives to resolve all outstanding issues and end the strike as soon as possible.”’
