Di Marzio report that whilst Sampdoria are negotiating with AS Roma for Gonzalo Villar, their dream move would be to bring back Lucas Torreira.

Torreira joined Arsenal from Sampdoria in the first place, leaving Italy on the back of an excellent season with the Serie A club.

€30m was too good to turn down, but now Sampdoria see the opportunity to bring the Uruguay international back for much less than that.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of Sampdoria interest in Torreira this summer, with Arsenal442 reporting earlier this month that the club had been in touch with Torreira’s representatives to explore a move.

At the time, the report suggested Torreira’s salary and Arsenal’s valuation were major obstacles to a deal, and the 26-year-old was also seriously considering other options.

Yet with little progress from any club to complete the signing, perhaps Sampdoria are starting to believe the move might become a genuine possibility for them.

Torreira has a year left on his Arsenal deal, and despite being called back for pre-season with the Gunners, he left the U.S. tour early to travel to Italy and hasn’t played a game since.

If Torreira ends up completing a transfer, his lack of effort to reintegrate with Arsenal won’t matter much. But if all his efforts to leave end up falling through, he’s set himself up for a long year in North London.
