The Nigeria Police Force, Oyo State Command, has commenced sensitisation talks with political stakeholders in preparation for hitch free campaigns ahead of the 2023 general polls in the state.

The command’s spokesman, SP Adewale Osifeso, made this known in a statement on Friday in Ibadan.

Mr Osifeso said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Williams while addressing the stakeholders, enjoined them to embrace peace and shun acts capable of truncating the relative peace and tranquility enjoyed by residents.

Mr Williams highlighted measures already put in place toward realising hitch-free campaigns and the general polls.

The Commissioner of Police advised the political parties participating in the general elections to submit details of their campaign schedules to include dates and routes for adequate security cover.

He told the gathering that the command had formed a special crowd control unit to cater to cases of crowd management before, during and after the campaigns.

Mr Williams said that there would be regular patrols across the length and breadth of the state, intelligence-led stop-and-searches and technology-aided surveillance during the period.

He called on parents, guardians and leaders wielding various degrees of influence to prevail on their children, wards and protégées to avoid being used as cannon fodders by agents of mischief to disrupt the polity.

Mr Williams warned that heavy sanctions awaited violators in accordance with the laws and statues of the land.

Osun Guber: Tribunal to hear Oyetola’s suit October 4

Published

on

The Osun Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo on Monday adjourned until October 4 the pre-hearing of a petition filed by Governor Gboyega Oyetola against the declaration of Ademola Adeleke as state’s governor-elect.

The tribunal’s chairman, Justice Tertsea Kume, fixed the date and granted INEC, PDP and Mr Adeleke seven days to respond to the tribunal’s pre-hearing form.

Earlier, counsel to the All Progress Congress (APC), Kayode Olatoke, informed the court of his readiness to continue with the pre-hearing session, having filed his form TF008, where issues for determination were raised.

On the tribunal’s request for advice, Mr Olatoke suggested that the matter should be held down for a few hours for the respondents to respond to the tribunal pre-hearing form.

Counsel to the INEC, Ben Ananaba, said the pre-hearing could not go on because he was just served with the pre-hearing form this morning, saying statutorily, they have seven days to respond.

Counsel to Mr Adeleke, Bamidele Abolarin and counsel representing PDP, Nathaniel Oke, SAN, also requested the tribunal to give them the required seven days to respond.

Addressing journalists after the sitting, Mr Olagoke said the adjournment was not out of place, but the tribunal can abridge the days required for any parties to respond.

He said PDP was ready to defend its victory in the last governorship election in the state, despite the ugly incident in 2018.

Following the July 16 governorship election in Osun, Mr Oyetola and the APC filed a petition before the Election Petition Tribunal sitting at the State High Court, Osogbo.

The petitioners seeking justice challenged the election results in some of the local government areas and prayed the tribunal to return their mandate to them.

INEC had declared Mr Adeleke winner of the election, having polled 403,271 against 375,027 polled by Mr Oyetola.

Why Afenifere won’t support Tinubu, Atiku – Adebanjo

Afenifere denies endorsing Tinubu’s 2023 presidential ambition

The leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has revealed why the group will not support the All Progressives Congress’ candidate, Bola Tinubu, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 presidential election.

Adebanjo said Afenifere stood on justice and fairness and believed in true federalism and the Federal Character principle.

The Afenifere leader disclosed this on Monday in a statement while clarifying his position on the group’s support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 general election.

Responding to the backlash that followed his announcement of the group’s support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, Adebanjo said, “…not a few Yoruba leaders questioned why I should be supporting Peter Obi, a candidate of Igbo extraction, against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba. I took my time to explain that the presidency is not a contest between the Yorubas and the Igbos and to a large extent I was able to convince many.

“But ever since, social media has been filled with comments tending to ethnicise the campaign instead of making it issue-based. Afenifere has, therefore, decided to address you today and through you educate the public on the ideological and equitable principles which have influenced our decision.”

Adebanjo stated that Afenifere “is the Yoruba interpretation of the social welfarist ideology of Action Group, a political party founded by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his colleagues in 1951 with strong advocacy for federalism as the best form of government to give the federating units the requisite autonomy to thrive and peacefully compete among themselves for the ultimate development of Nigeria.”

Breaking: PDP Postpones North-West Zonal Congress

He said other founding fathers of Nigeria — Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo — agreed to the system with the endorsement of colonial secretary Sir Oliver Littleton in 1954 “and embodied in the 1960 independence constitution. This is the modest contribution of Afenifere in shaping Nigeria into a federation where no person or ethnic nationality is oppressed.”

The nonagenarian said Afenifere had always advocated and insisted on restructuring of the country “long before the parties conducted their Conventions to elect their National Executives and candidates,” and had proposed “a synthesis of the identical Resolutions of the 2014 National Conference and the APC El-Rufai 2018 True Federalism Committee.”

Adebanjo said Afenifere and the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum “unanimously proposed that the minimum condition for a peaceful transition from the disastrous eight years of Buhari’s government headed by a President of northern extraction was to have the next President from the South,” a position which, he said, was supported by southern governors irrespective of their political parties.

Abe urges APC, PDP, other Rivers governorship candidates not to fight

He added, “In this quest for peace, based on equity and inclusiveness, the Yoruba took the first turn at the zoning arrangement in 1999, and that led to the emergence of Chief (Olusegun) Obasanjo, the current Vice President is a Yoruba man and equity forbids us for presuming to support another Yoruba person for the presidency in 2023.

“The current President is a Fulani from the North-West and by virtue of the zoning arrangement that has governed Nigeria since 1999, power is supposed to return to the south imminently. The

“The South-West, as I have pointed out, has produced a president and currently sits as VP, the South-South has spent a total of six years in the Presidency, but the Igbo people of the South-East have never tasted presidency in Nigeria, and now that the power is due back in the South, equity demands that it be ceded to the Igbo.

“We cannot continue to demand that the Igbo people remain in Nigeria, while we at the same time continue to brutally marginalise and exclude them from the power dynamics.”

Adebanjo, therefore, condemned the ceding of the PDP presidential ticket to “a Northern Fulani Muslim to succeed General Muhammadu Buhari, another Fulani Muslim, who will soon complete eight years of uneventful and disastrous rule. One can imagine such a high degree of political insensitivity.”

  2023: Tinubu is Very Sick

The Afenifere leader also stated that the group would not jettison equity, inclusiveness and justice just because one of their own — Asiwaju Bola Tinubu — was in the contest.

“We will not compromise this principle of justice, equity and inclusiveness because one of our own Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a frontline candidate,” Adebanjo said.

Adebanjo, who said Afenifere had “no apologies but due courage of our conviction that Nigeria can only prosper in righteousness,” reiterated that, “To keep Nigeria one, everyone should be Obi/Datti compliant,” and advocated that that should be the slogan henceforth.

2023: Kachikwu says ADC will beat APC, PDP, unveils plans on Tuesday

Dumebi Kachikwu, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot beat the party in the 2023 election.

Mr Kachikwu said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

He said the two major parties stood no chance of winning as they have failed Nigerians.

“The country has continued to lag in all indices of development since 1999 when PDP assumed power after which it handed over to APC in 2015,” he said.

Mr Kachikwu said the indices of good governance anchored on the rule of law in Nigeria have remained negative since the return to civil rule in 1999.

Breaking: PDP Postpones North-West Zonal Congress

He said the two dominant parties gravely impoverished the country and made it the “poverty capital of the world.”

“Today, the inflation rate has rallied to a 17-year high of 20.5 per cent up from 8.06 per cent in 2014 before the APC took over the reins of power at the centre in 2015, notwithstanding the humongous debt the party has amassed for the country through reckless borrowing.

“This rate of inflation simply means that the average Nigerian cannot afford basic daily necessities like three square meals due to skyrocketing food prices and other essential services like healthcare and education for their children,” he said.

Abe urges APC, PDP, other Rivers governorship candidates not to fight

He urged Nigerians to reinvent the country by voting for ADC, saying that the party has the vision and the know-how to turn the fortunes of the country around.

The ADC presidential candidate urged Nigerians to vote wisely in 2023 to reclaim, revive and restore the positive destiny of Nigeria.

Mr Kachikwu said he would unveil his plans for the election on Tuesday.

Mr Kachikwu was purportedly expelled by a faction of the ADC led by Ralph Nwosu who had run the party for 17 years until he was removed by another group in the party which set up an interim leadership headed by Patricia Akwashiki, a former PDP senator.

Despite the expulsion, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published his name on the final list of presidential candidates on 20 September.
