Buhari told Tinubu to remove Osinbajo’s name from APC campaign council: Keyamo

Buhari, Tinubu, Osinbajo

Festus Keyamo has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari directed that his vice, Yemi Osinbajo, should not be included in the APC presidential campaign council.

This followed reactions that triggered the absence of Mr Osinbajo from the list of the Tinubu/Shettima presidential campaign council.

The vice-president contested the ticket of the All Progressives Congress presidential primary in June against Mr Tinubu, who is presumed to be his political benefactor.

“Nothing can be farther from the facts. For the avoidance of doubt, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, is the Chairman of the Campaign Council. As a result, Mr. President has SPECIFICALLY directed that the Vice-President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha should be left out of the Campaign Council to concentrate on the governance of the country and administration of Government,” Mr Keyamo said.

The junior labour minister in the Buhari-led regime, who also doubles as the spokesperson for the APC presidential campaign council, revealed this in a statement Saturday.

On Friday, the APC released a list of 422-member Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) ahead of the commencement of the party’s 2023 presidential campaign.

In the list sighted by Peoples Gazette, Mr Buhari is expected to head the campaign council. Mr Osinbajo was the only high-profile member of the ruling APC not listed.

In an attempt to justify the controversial list with the non-inclusion of Mr Osinbajo, Mr Keyamo explained that it would be wrong for all the key functionaries of government in the Buhari regime to abandon their positions for electioneering campaigns.

“Our candidates and the leadership of the APC have also indicated that the list is not sacrosanct as there may be periodic review of it as circumstances dictate.

“We will not toe the path of those who governed the country in an irresponsible manner before us and our Party is not in total disarray like those who wish to ‘rescue’ the country, but cannot simply manage their own internal affairs,” Mr Keyamo added.

2023: Anambra bans campaign posters in public places

Naija News Today

A group, Coalition of Social Protection Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Partners has unveiled a Social Protection Advocacy to fast track poverty eradication campaign in Kaduna State.

Newsmen report that the group is a national coalition of CSOs advocating for increased media coverage of social protection programme in the country.

The campaign tagged: ‘Social Protection to End Poverty (#SP2EP2023) is being implemented in collaboration with the Kaduna Social Protection Accountability Coalition (KADSPAC).

Chairperson of KADSPAC, Jessica Bartholomew said the exercise was an initiative of the National Social Protection Forum (NSPF) being implemented in Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, among others.

She said the group was an umbrella body of CSOs, media and development organisations working towards promoting transparency and accountability in Social Protection (SP) programmes.

She noted that social protection programme has been a critical development instrument in the country in the past 10 years, noting that it had potentials to lift individuals and households from extreme poverty, build resilience against shocks, stress and disasters such as flood, drought and pandemics.

She, however, identified lack of adequate funding, legislation and fragmentation of interventions as some of the obstacles militating against effective implementation of the programme towards improving the social and economic status of the poor and vulnerable.

According to her, the campaign is designed to secure continued commitment of governments and political candidates to facilitate sustainable investment in the social protection programmes to raise the living standard of the vulnerable population.

She said, “the #SP2EP2023 campaign will ensure functional and coordinated system for health, education and employment for all.

“The campaign will address issues of poverty, gender and social inclusion for children, persons with disability, senior citizens and other marginalised groups in the society.

“It aim to create awareness among Nigerians on benefits of social protection, and encourage them to demand for it to ensure a resilient society through inclusive governance and efficient interventions.

“It is also to strengthen the capacity of the electorates to demand for social protection services as a right in the 2023 general elections as well as support CSOs and citizens to hold winners of the elections accountable to their campaign promises on social protection”.

Also speaking, Mr Philip Yatai, Co-chair, Open Government Partnership (OGP) Technical Working Group (TWG), said Gov. Nasir El-Rrufai’s administration accorded pririoty to social protection programme, adding that the government was working through the OGP-TWG to enhance access to intervention at the grassroots.

He said the campaign was critical towards reducing the number of people living below poverty line through increased access to intervention.

According to him, only 3.7 per cent of the population of the state has been covered under the programme, while unemployment rate stands at 43.3 per cent.

The spokesman of the campaign, Festus Keyamo, said President Buhari asked that Osinbajo alongside Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, should not be part of the campaign council so they could focus on governance.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to some stories making the rounds that there may be something amiss within the family of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the name of our own revered and respected Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, is not included in the list of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.”

“Nothing can be farther from the facts. For the avoidance of doubt, President Muhammadu Buhari , GCFR, is the Chairman of the Campaign Council. As a result, Mr. President has SPECIFICALLY directed that the Vice-President and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha should be left out of the Campaign Council to concentrate on the governance of the country and administration of Government. As a responsible Party and Government, all the key functionaries of government cannot abandon their positions for electioneering campaigns. The APC has the mandate of the Nigerian people to administer the country on their behalf at least till May, 29, 2023, and this we intend to do with all sense of responsibility.
