New Senate aviation committee chair promises to partner Reps to address sectoral challenges

Biodun Olujimi, chairperson, Senate Committee on Aviation, says the upper chamber will work with the House of Representatives to find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Ms Olujimi, representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, disclosed this while speaking with reporters following her new appointment on Wednesday in Abuja.

“We will have to work together; we will be proactive about it because the issues must be resolved,” Ms Olujimi said. “We cannot allow aviation to fail because that is the only way by which we can move around.”

She stressed the importance of the sector to the nation’s economy, saying her committee would ensure adequate oversight functions to the aviation ministry and agencies to ensure that it thrived.

“There are serious challenges right now, which we will sit together and iron out,” she noted.

Ms Olujimi added, “The house of representatives is already on it. We don’t usually overlap. When the lower house is on it, we always allow them to finish and pass it down.”

Ms Olujimi explained that the lower chamber held a series of meetings with aviation stakeholders, adding that the senate will await their resolutions and act accordingly.

“With the serious insecurity that we are still witnessing, we must make aviation work. It is only through aviation we can surmount our problems for now. So aviation must not collapse.

“We must do everything to ensure that it stays afloat, we must get it back,” Ms Olujimi said.

The lawmaker, however, said she would also work with her predecessor, Smart Adeyemi (APC-Kogi), to bring about the needed solution in the sector.

“It will be good to work with the former chairman because he knows his onions, we are going to work hard to make success of the assignment,” she said.

On Tuesday, the Senate reshuffled the leadership of some of its standing committees.

Following the announcement, Mr Adeyemi, the former chairman of the aviation committee, was moved to chair the committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The former Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi (PDP-Kebbi ), now chairs the committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

Former deputy minority leader, Ibrahim Danbaba, is the chairman, Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence, while Michael Nnachi (PDP-Ebonyi) is the chairman, Diaspora and Inter-Governmental Agencies.

Elections not do-or-die affair – Gov Mohammed

Political parties, candidates, and supporters have been urged not to view elections for elective offices as a life-or-death situation by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Mohammed, who stated this in a goodwill message on the occasion of Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Anniversary celebration on Saturday, also urged political parties and supporters to play by the rules.

He asked them to bear in mind that “it is only God that gives power to whoever He likes at a point in time”.

“It is not therefore the amount of money, hate speech, fake news or political thuggery that would make contestants emerge victorious during the elections,” he said.

He further called on all and sundry to re-dedicate themselves to the country, be patriotic and intensify prayers to God to shower His mercy and blessings so as to continue to live in peace with one another.

“As we celebrate the 62nd Independence anniversary, we should reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of the founding fathers of this country and also strive to ensure that their labour shall not be in vain.

“It is gratifying to note that sixty-two years after independence, we have defeated the skepticism on our ability to govern ourselves.

“Today, we have shown to the world that we are not only able to govern ourselves, but are able to understand our differences, respect each other’s values and unite towards developing our country in spite of our diverse cultures,” the governor said.

According to him, as a responsible and responsive government, his administration had taken measures in collaborating with security agencies to protect the lives and property of the people of the state by swiftly addressing any form of security challenges.

He assured the citizenry that security would continue to top his priority to sustain the relative peace enjoyed in the state.

Mohammed added that his government had taken a multi-dimensional approach to all the development projects which had resulted in success, particularly in Infrastructure development.

“We have also executed several other projects in the areas of education, health, housing, agriculture, water, power supply and poverty alleviation.”

“In seeking national improvement, we must join hands in growing the economy, creating jobs, feeding the hungry, educating our youth, caring for the sick and protecting our people and their way of life from evil and misguided foes who seek to destroy all that is good.”
