RC Lens secured a comprehensive 4-0 victory against Clermont at Stade Gabriel Montpied, with Loïs Openda making history by scoring the fastest hat-trick in Ligue 1 history.
Clermont, who finished 17th in their debut Ligue 1 campaign in 2021/22, were hoping for a top-half finish and faced a Lens side winless in their previous three games.
However, Lens quickly took control of the game, and despite an early chance for Clermont, Openda’s three goals in quick succession proved to be the turning point.
Despite a late triple substitution by Clermont coach Pascal Gastien, Lens continued to dominate, with Alexis Claude-Maurice scoring a fourth goal to seal the victory. The result leaves Clermont six points off the top half of the table, while Lens continues to dream of UEFA Champions League qualification.
