Jigawa Death toll nears 100 amid ravaging floods

Naija News Today

Authorities in Jigawa have reported six more deaths as a result of the floods that have continued to wreak havoc on communities in the north-western state.

This comes barely three days after police authorities in Jigawa said 29 other people lost their lives to flood-related incidents. As of Tuesday, the state has lost 98 residents to the ravaging floods.

The Chairman of Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sani Babura, who confirmed the six new deaths lamented that flooding in the state has reached an alarming stage.

He stated that the number of communities affected by the floods was increasing every day, a development he said has made the situation more aggravated.

Sani linked the deaths to floods, rainstorms, and lightning, adding that at least 57,000 have been affected so far.

According to him, more than 100,000 have been forced out of their homes and some of them are living within the 49 camps established by the state government to provide shelter for displaced people.

“With regards to the farmlands, roads, and other infrastructure destroyed by the flooding, an assessment is ongoing and the statistics will be released, but the damage is enormous,” the SEMA boss said.

He, however, gave an assurance that the agency was working 24 hours in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other partners to support the victims.

At least 83 people, including children and women, have lost their lives to flood-related incidents in the state since the beginning of August.

The floods also took a toll on infrastructure in the state as some roads were cut off as a result of erosion, forcing locals to seek alternative routes to their destinations.

Recently, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) confirmed Jigawa as the worst-hit state by the floods ravaging parts of the country.

It said 16 local government areas of the state were affected and more than 72 people have died with property, livelihoods, and infrastructure damaged as of September 7.

the NIHSA has appealed to authorities in various states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take necessary measures to prevent the ugly flooding menace of the past years.

Nigeria, according to it, is now in the peak of flooding season and there is a need for the government, especially at the state and local government levels to intensify and set up efforts to avert related disasters in their domains.

The agency stated that almost all 36 states and the FCT have experienced one form of flooding or another, and warned that the rivers Niger and Benue system have started building up as Nigeria is located at the lowest point of the River Niger Basin occupied by nine countries.

Specifically, it asked authorities in the 13 states that fall on the main course of rivers Niger and Benue system to put in place adequate measures and enhanced preparedness to mitigate any eventual flooding and accompanying disasters.

The affected states include Kebbi, Niger, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Cross River, Rivers. and Bayelsa.

Governor Samuel Ortom and Governor Nyesom Wike

Governor Samuel Ortom says he is against the removal of PDP national chairman Iyorchia Ayu.

Mr Ortom, who shares the same caucus with Governor Nyesom Wike, backtracked on the collective position of the group demanding the removal of Mr Ayu.

In a statement released by the Benue governor’s chief press secretary Nathaniel Ikyur, Mr Ortom said he believes in the leadership of Mr Ayu and his ability to take the PDP to victory in the 2023 election.

“It is an open secret that Governor Ortom worked tirelessly, alongside other prominent Benue citizens, to ensure that Dr Ayu gets elected as the national chairman of our great party even against all odds,” said the statement. “He cannot, therefore, turn around to work against him to be removed from office.”

It added, “In the run-up to the National Convention, Governor Ortom got the backing of many leaders of the PDP who believed in his sense of judgment when he vouched for the integrity and capacity of Dr Iyorchia Ayu to lead and rebuild the PDP to victory and rescue Nigeria from the misrule of the APC maladministration.”

That is why, according to the statement, Mr Ayu was returned unopposed by the northern caucus of the party “and got elected as the national chairman of the PDP at the party’s convention.”

The PDP and its flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar, said its confidence in winning the election remains unshaken and will move on with or without the support of Mr Wike.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has again postponed the start of its campaigns earlier slated for Wednesday.

The director-general of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council and Governor Simon Lalong disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Lalong said the development followed the party’s decision to include more people in the campaign council.

“Recall that we had earlier earmarked a peace walk and prayers for Wednesday to officially kick off our campaigns for the 2023 presidential elections,” the statement said. “We had also announced that the members of the campaign council report at the campaign headquarters on that day to collect their letters of appointments.”

However, it said due to the expansion of the list to accommodate more stakeholders and interests within “the APC family, we have decided to adjust the timetable of these activities.”

He explained that this was to ensure that everyone was on board before activities officially commenced, adding that the activities earlier announced for September 28 would no longer hold.

Mr Lalong said as the ruling and most attractive party in Nigeria, the council understood the sacrifices and understanding of its teeming members, who were willing to volunteer themselves for this great task ahead.

He said this showed the enormous love the party members had for its candidate, Bola Tinubu.

He, however, said a new date and timetable of events would be announced soon.
