PDP Crisis: Why we opposed Ayu’s sack, discarded Wike’s option – Atiku Campaign

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says he will not back down from his demand for the resignation of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu.

Speaking at the Rivers State PDP stakeholders meeting in Government House, Port Harcourt on Thursday, Wike said that he will not leave the PDP for any reason.

The governor stated that he was rather interested in preserving the sanity of the party and would stay back to fight for the enthronement of unity, inclusivity, equity and peace in the PDP.

The governor said he is a man of character, unlike those who cannot keep their word and walked out of the party at the Eagle Square in Abuja in 2014.

He said, “One thing I have always told people is if anybody is thinking, doing anything to think that we will leave PDP, foul.

Nobody can break my rank, Wike boasts

“We will do the fight in the party. We are not like them when in 2014 they walked out of Eagle Square. They’ve forgotten. They walked out and joined APC. Is it not correct?

“Did they remain to fight inside the party? But we remained, they ran away. Now, there is a fight in the party, we will not run.

“We will fight it at this party. Those who run away from the fight are weak people. We will not. So everybody should know this is the state where we are. So that nobody tells you all kinds of stories.”

Why I met with Atiku, Obasanjo, Tinubu, Obi – Wike

The governor insists that the constitution of the party clearly states that elective and party offices must be zoned which should be respected.

Wike wondered why the former PDP BoT chairman will be pressurised to resign and the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, is excusing himself from keeping to doing what is right.

He said, “You have taken presidential candidate, you have taken party chairman, you have also taken the D.G (director general) of the campaign. We are talking about party politics. Decisions are made by the presidential candidate, chairman of the party and the D.G of the campaign.

“They are telling you they told the chairman of the BOT to resign. So you know there is a problem. You said he should go and resign.

“You can put pressure on him to resign when his tenure hasn’t come to an end. But you cannot put pressure on the chairman to resign. You think at our level you will deceive us. You’ll tell us stories.”

PDP, Ondo govt trade words over use of venue to welcome high-profile APC defector

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo has accused Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of denying the opposition party venue to welcome a decampee and former cabinet member in his government.

The PDP had announced that a former Commissioner, Yetunde Adeyanju, in the cabinet of Mr Akeredolu, was set to defect to the PDP.

Mrs Adeyanju, a prominent politician, who enjoys wide support from locals in the Odigbo area of the state, had in July 2022, resigned from the APC-led government of Mr Akeredolu.

The former commissioner, who initially headed the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, tendered her resignation after she was redeployed from the water resources ministry to the Ministry of Planning and Urban Development.

The PDP in a statement on Monday condemned the alleged directive by Mr Akeredolu to deny the party the use of Government Field Ore to receive Mrs Adeyanju.

“As preparations were on top gear for the event, the Area Commander arrived to disperse leaders and party supporters as directed from above,” Kennedy Peretei, the spokesperson for the PDP in Ondo said in the statement obtained by Peoples Gazette.

It was gathered that the PDP had paid N200,000 to use the Government Field Ore venue to receive Mrs Adeyanju and other detectors from the APC.

Speaking further, Mr Peretie told The Gazette that police operatives, led by the Area Commander, arrived at the venue in the early hours of Monday to disperse the PDP supporters, stating that they were “directed from above,” and without any refund.

“The Governor cannot stand his former Commissioner joining the PDP just 48 hours before the commencement of Campaigns.

“There is no doubt, Akeredolu is jittery that his party, APC, having performed very woefully will be disgraced at the 2023 general elections,” he added.

According to him, “This level of high-handedness and abuse of public office will not save Akeredolu and his party from failure.

“Our party advises Mr Governor not to allow his fears about failure to cloud his reasoning, as this will consume him. Government Field Ore does not belong to him but the people of Ondo State,” Mr Peretie stated.

However, the Ondo government denied the claim of the opposition party, describing the allegations as “mischievous”.

Reacting in a phone conversation, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, told The Gazette that there was a clash in using the venue between the opposition party and the members of the ruling APC.

“What happened was that the PDP and the APC had a clash of the use of the venue in the Odigbo area as both parties had their canopies already set up for different events at the same venue.

“And to avoid any form of security threat, the police had to inform the leaders of the two political parties to proceed to their respective party secretariats and hold their event over there to avoid political clash.

“The police have to disperse them to leave the venue. So, it wasn’t that we denied her (Adeyanju) and the opposition party from using the venue as claimed,” Mrs Ademola-Olateju told The Gazette.

Gboyega Oyetola and Ademola Adeleke

The Osun Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo on Monday adjourned until October 4 the pre-hearing of a petition filed by Governor Gboyega Oyetola against the declaration of Ademola Adeleke as state’s governor-elect.

The tribunal’s chairman, Justice Tertsea Kume, fixed the date and granted INEC, PDP and Mr Adeleke seven days to respond to the tribunal’s pre-hearing form.

Earlier, counsel to the All Progress Congress (APC), Kayode Olatoke, informed the court of his readiness to continue with the pre-hearing session, having filed his form TF008, where issues for determination were raised.

On the tribunal’s request for advice, Mr Olatoke suggested that the matter should be held down for a few hours for the respondents to respond to the tribunal pre-hearing form.

Counsel to the INEC, Ben Ananaba, said the pre-hearing could not go on because he was just served with the pre-hearing form this morning, saying statutorily, they have seven days to respond.

Counsel to Mr Adeleke, Bamidele Abolarin and counsel representing PDP, Nathaniel Oke, SAN, also requested the tribunal to give them the required seven days to respond.

Addressing journalists after the sitting, Mr Olagoke said the adjournment was not out of place, but the tribunal can abridge the days required for any parties to respond.

He said PDP was ready to defend its victory in the last governorship election in the state, despite the ugly incident in 2018.

Following the July 16 governorship election in Osun, Mr Oyetola and the APC filed a petition before the Election Petition Tribunal sitting at the State High Court, Osogbo.

The petitioners seeking justice challenged the election results in some of the local government areas and prayed the tribunal to return their mandate to them.

INEC had declared Mr Adeleke winner of the election, having polled 403,271 against 375,027 polled by Mr Oyetola.

Why Afenifere won’t support Tinubu, Atiku – Adebanjo

Afenifere denies endorsing Tinubu’s 2023 presidential ambition

The leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has revealed why the group will not support the All Progressives Congress’ candidate, Bola Tinubu, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 presidential election.

Adebanjo said Afenifere stood on justice and fairness and believed in true federalism and the Federal Character principle.

The Afenifere leader disclosed this on Monday in a statement while clarifying his position on the group’s support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 general election.

Responding to the backlash that followed his announcement of the group’s support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, Adebanjo said, “…not a few Yoruba leaders questioned why I should be supporting Peter Obi, a candidate of Igbo extraction, against Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba. I took my time to explain that the presidency is not a contest between the Yorubas and the Igbos and to a large extent I was able to convince many.

“But ever since, social media has been filled with comments tending to ethnicise the campaign instead of making it issue-based. Afenifere has, therefore, decided to address you today and through you educate the public on the ideological and equitable principles which have influenced our decision.”

Adebanjo stated that Afenifere “is the Yoruba interpretation of the social welfarist ideology of Action Group, a political party founded by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his colleagues in 1951 with strong advocacy for federalism as the best form of government to give the federating units the requisite autonomy to thrive and peacefully compete among themselves for the ultimate development of Nigeria.”

Nobody can break my rank, Wike boasts

He said other founding fathers of Nigeria — Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo — agreed to the system with the endorsement of colonial secretary Sir Oliver Littleton in 1954 “and embodied in the 1960 independence constitution. This is the modest contribution of Afenifere in shaping Nigeria into a federation where no person or ethnic nationality is oppressed.”

The nonagenarian said Afenifere had always advocated and insisted on restructuring of the country “long before the parties conducted their Conventions to elect their National Executives and candidates,” and had proposed “a synthesis of the identical Resolutions of the 2014 National Conference and the APC El-Rufai 2018 True Federalism Committee.”

Adebanjo said Afenifere and the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum “unanimously proposed that the minimum condition for a peaceful transition from the disastrous eight years of Buhari’s government headed by a President of northern extraction was to have the next President from the South,” a position which, he said, was supported by southern governors irrespective of their political parties.

Why I met with Atiku, Obasanjo, Tinubu, Obi – Wike

He added, “In this quest for peace, based on equity and inclusiveness, the Yoruba took the first turn at the zoning arrangement in 1999, and that led to the emergence of Chief (Olusegun) Obasanjo, the current Vice President is a Yoruba man and equity forbids us for presuming to support another Yoruba person for the presidency in 2023.

“The current President is a Fulani from the North-West and by virtue of the zoning arrangement that has governed Nigeria since 1999, power is supposed to return to the south imminently. The

“The South-West, as I have pointed out, has produced a president and currently sits as VP, the South-South has spent a total of six years in the Presidency, but the Igbo people of the South-East have never tasted presidency in Nigeria, and now that the power is due back in the South, equity demands that it be ceded to the Igbo.

“We cannot continue to demand that the Igbo people remain in Nigeria, while we at the same time continue to brutally marginalise and exclude them from the power dynamics.”

Adebanjo, therefore, condemned the ceding of the PDP presidential ticket to “a Northern Fulani Muslim to succeed General Muhammadu Buhari, another Fulani Muslim, who will soon complete eight years of uneventful and disastrous rule. One can imagine such a high degree of political insensitivity.”

Court orders APC to conduct fresh governorship primary

The Afenifere leader also stated that the group would not jettison equity, inclusiveness and justice just because one of their own — Asiwaju Bola Tinubu — was in the contest.

“We will not compromise this principle of justice, equity and inclusiveness because one of our own Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a frontline candidate,” Adebanjo said.

Adebanjo, who said Afenifere had “no apologies but due courage of our conviction that Nigeria can only prosper in righteousness,” reiterated that, “To keep Nigeria one, everyone should be Obi/Datti compliant,” and advocated that that should be the slogan henceforth.
