Gumi warns Nigerians against electing regional, sectional leaders in 2023

Renown Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi has said that the nation may not survive if it is governed by a regional or sectional leader in 2023, unless Nigerians enthrone a President that will be acceptable to all.

Although Gumi did not mention the well controversial Muslim Muslim ticket in the statement he released yesterday night, but rather warned Nigerians vehemently to save the nation by electing the leadership with national appeal that would save the country from the present woes.

He said that it is unfortunate, “the next president is going to meet a great mess”, pointing out that ” In a metaphorical sense, the nation is suffering from three main disabling diseases; they are Leprosy, Diabetes, and HIV AIDs, all in one body”.

According to him, “the next president needs to be intelligent and supported by men with acumen not the ‘garagara’ person with an impulsive temperament that is after the praise of sentimental citizens. He has to act quickly and carefully. He has to center his efforts and concentration inwards not outside. I know a lot of our problems have roots in foreign interests, yet local problems must be solved locally.”

“The president has to be careful of the dishonest clergy. Like mosquitoes, they feed on every system without adding any values except polarizing the nation more on the religious divide. I cannot imagine a nation facing insurgencies left, right, and center, yet the clergy would fold their arms without intermediating to see for conflict resolutions. Rather they are busy fueling religious polarization.”

Gumi remarked, “if the next president also follows the same trajectory thinking that the present government was only dealing with the criminals with kid-glove, then a greater insurgency will definitely ensue. It’s taking almost twelve years to fight Boko Haram in the North East, with their leader only killed during a factional fight, not by our military action. And now, many BH are fortunately surrendering as a result of the genuine efforts of reconciliation and rehabilitation by the federal and state government as demonstrated by action, not rhetoric. This unfortunately is irking some especially the elites as cajoling criminals. To them, anything short of annihilating them is no solution”.

“Comparing them to IPOB who are non-repentant and not ready for reconciliation is disingenuous. Yet politicians have to deal with that. The economy is in such disarray that needs a true nationalist that will institute measures even if they are against these ‘fake’ corporate bodies that are Dracula sucking the blood out of the nation. Not the kind of ineffective but detrimental measures we experience in the past, but well-studied economic measures that will not only increase the GPD but raise the per capita income of the individuals. Today in Nigeria, the middle-class income strata are almost effaced. You are either poor or extremely rich.”

“As for security, there is a need for a general overhaul to reflect the security challenges the nation is facing.

The nation needs state and county police, and a national guard with forest rangers also drawn largely from the dwellers of the forest. No Nigerian should be marginalized in development and participation in nation-building”.

“The Nation needs a robust educational reform. No child should be left behind. In a ten-year generation, must Nigerians should be educated somehow and the nation will then rise to great heights. Without education all said will go with the wind. The next president is not going to face problems that are for a novice nor can the nation wait for him to learn any longer. He should be ready from day one and like a sprinter ready for action with the blow of the whistle. ”

Nigeria will not collapse in 2023

“Nigeria cannot be ruled effectively by a sectional or regional politician but one that has the national appeal of carrying all along. May Allah heal our nation from bad leadership and communal clashes. Amin”, Gumi added.

Buhari has done his best, but obviously not enough: IPAC

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) says President Muhammadu Buhari has done his best, but it was not enough as the nation needs more from him.

The Lagos State chairman of IPAC, Olusegun Mobolaji, remarked while reacting to President Muhammadu Buhari’s 62nd Independence Day broadcast on Saturday.

“Well, he (Buhari) has done his best. This is the best that the President can do, and on a day like this, we say ‘well done, but obviously, the best is not good enough is the reality,” he said.

He, however, said both Nigerian leaders and citizens have roles to play to realise a better and brighter future for the country.

“We pray for a greater and better Nigeria, but this cannot come if everybody does not play his or her role- the leaders and the electorate, the great and the small, the young and old, corporate organisations and all workers.

“Everybody has to play his or her roles to make Nigeria a better place to live and stay,” Mr Mobolaji said.

Congratulating Nigerians on the anniversary, the IPAC boss urged citizens to use the opportunity of the next transition in the 2023 general elections to choose leaders that would fulfil their dreams and aspirations.

“We should put our heads and eyes down to elect the right person-the right man or woman for the job.

“Leaders that can deliver the kind of country we all desire. Nigeria is a great nation and ought to be a great nation,” he added.

On campaigns ahead of the forthcoming elections, Mr Mobolaji said all politicians should ensure decorum and respect one another.

“I use this opportunity to call on all candidates and their supporters, as they go about campaigns for the 2023 general elections, they should do it with all modesty and be moderate.

“Please, do not try to intimidate or harass anyone. The cloud is big enough for all birds to fly without touching one another,” he said.

He said Nigerians should continue to learn from gains and pains since independence.

Mr Mobolaji added, “The whole thing is in our hands- the leaders, politicians and the electorate.”

Mr Buhari had assured citizens that their resilience and patience would not end in vain as his administration continued to reposition and strengthen the security agencies to tackle the nation’s security challenges.

Nigeria will not collapse in 2023

The president also highlighted some of the achievements of his regime while addressing Nigerians in a broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 62nd Independence anniversary.

Peter Obi rally locks down Lagos, large turnout in Bauchi, Asaba, Calabar

Supporters of Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate, on Saturday trooped out en masse across Lagos, Bauchi, Asaba and Calabar to rally support for the former Anambra governor.

Traffic congestion was recorded in several parts of the cities where the rally took place.

In Lagos, the Lekki-Epe expressway as well as Surulere, supporters of Mr Obi were seen marching and chanting songs of praise for the presidential hopeful.

Many supporters of Mr Obi ditched the Nigerian green and white flag for the Labour Party’s multi-coloured flag, waving as they marched in excitement. Others adorned paraphernalia of the party.

Another mammoth crowd marched from Inter-bus roundabout along Nnbisi road in Asaba, Delta state, for the Obidatti rally, leaving a scanty audience to receive Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s independence day address.

A similar situation was recorded in Warri where Mr Obi’s supporters converged in droves at Effurun roundabout and thereon marched to Airport road and later Warri city stadium where Labour Party leaders encouraged them to vote wisely in the 2023 general elections.

In Calabar, dancers adorned traditional attires and lined major roads chanting “Obi! Obi!” to match the beats of traditional musical instruments. Other supporters adorned the Labour Party’s paraphernalia in a show of support for Mr Obi.

In a Facebook video posted by The Nation, another excited crowd marched in support of Mr Obi in Bauchi. Some of them could be seen chanting “Carry me dey go, Obi, carry me dey go, dey go, dey go,” while waving the Nigerian and Labour Party flags.

The massive turnout has put to question claims that Mr Obi, labelled by opponents as a social media candidate because of the support he enjoys from Nigerian social space, would not enjoy the same support on the ballot.
