President Muhammadu Buhari has formally welcomed former Minister of Aviation, Mr Femi Fani- Kayode, who recently defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kayode was led into the President’s office by the Caretaker Chairman of the APC and Governor of Yobe , Mr Mai-Mala Buni as well as Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara.
Speaking to State House correspondents after Kayode’s presentation, Buni quoted the President as describing the defection of Kayode to APC as a welcome development, saying that the president was pleased that the former minister had joined the APC.
He said: “We are here to present our newest member of the party, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode to the President and leader of the party.
“He is the newest member of APC and we just received him in appreciation and understanding of the President’s vision and magnanimity.
“The President received him very well. The President is a leader who shares his vision and looks toward greater Nigeria, so he received him very well and commended his courage.”
Fani-Kayode, who also spoke to the correspondents, said he believed that it was time for him to cross over to join hands with the President in moving Nigeria forward.
He said: “The point is that I felt it was time to do the right thing, to put Nigeria first and appreciate the efforts that have been made, particularly in the last couple of years in terms of security; fighting insurgency and terrorism.
“It is not always negative and when the time is right, we change direction to join forces and join hands to move the country forward.
“Doing this doesn’t mean we are enemies to anybody. Even if we are in another party, the PDP or any other party or group, we can still work together across party, regional, ethnic or religious lines,” he said
Peter Obi fumes over supporter’s alleged attack, arrest in Lagos
Peter Obi, a leading 2023 presidential candidate, has condemned an alleged attack on Labour Party supporters in Lagos State.
On Sunday in Oshodi, Lagos, a social media user named Obi Flag Boy is said to have been attacked.
Additionally, it was reported that a few party supporters had been detained prior to the rally on Saturday.
Obi reacted on Twitter by lambasting the assault and intimidation of the party members.
He emphasised that freedom of peaceful assembly and unrestricted electioneering are guaranteed by the constitution and urged security agencies to remind their agents to uphold civil liberties.
”Elections are not deemed free and fair when a certain group employs the tool of intimidation to ensure that the opposition is silenced, both at the campaigns and at the polls.
”Peaceful assembly and unfettered electioneering campaigns are constitutionally guaranteed. Both and other ordered liberties cannot be breached wilfully by security agents.
”Recent reports of OBIdients being silently arrested by some security agents is extremely disturbing and condemnable. We must ensure that everyone is given a level playing field in the forthcoming elections and that no eligible Nigerian, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, is disenfranchised, more so through violence and intimidation.
”I call on the Federal and State agencies to remind their operatives on the need to respect civil liberties,” he tweeted.
5000 APC members defect to PDP in Kogi
Over 5000 members of Kogi State’s ruling All Progressives Congress have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.
On Sunday, APC members defected to the PDP in Avrugo and a neighbouring ward in Kogi State’s Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area.
Honourable Collins Adama, the former vice chairman of the LGA who led other party members to defect to the PDP, said the APC had failed Nigerians.
According to him, it was time for Nigerians to vote out bad leadership in the 2023 general election, emphasising that any mistakes made now would spell doom for the country.
Adamu commended the leadership style of the stakeholders of the local government and praised the state and national level of the leading opposition party for electing candidates that can deliver dividend of democracy to all nooks and crannies of the nation.
The defectors were received into the PDP family by Igalamela/Odolu Local Government PDP Chairman, Honourable Attai Salifu and the party’s state assembly candidate, Honourable Zakito Umar, who said the ruling APC should be ready to pack their load from both Kogi State and at the national level.
Salifu in his address admonished other wards and polling units in the local government to emulate what was happening in Avurgo, adding that the PDP would win the 2023 general election.
On his part, the former executive chairman of the local government, who doubles as the state assembly candidate, Umar, said when he was in power, his administration executed nine physical infrastructural projects in Avrugo ward.
He listed some of the physical infrastructural projects to include construction of bridges, culvert , boreholes, primary health care centres and recreational centres across the length and breath of the ward.
If elected into the Kogi State House of Assembly, Umar promised to give the people effective and people oriented representation.
The women leader of the local government, Honourable Mary Atebije, described Umar as a man of competence and capacity adding that he was an administrator per excellence. She urged the electorates to believe in him because he has been tested and trusted in the local government.
2023: Group advises Muslims to vote for only competent leaders
An Islamic group, Muslim League for Accountability (MULAC), has advised Nigerians to vote for competent leaders and eschew primordial sentiments.
MULAC also urged Muslim youths to participate actively in the electioneering process of the 2023 general elections.
A communique issued after a summit by MULAC’s chairman, Sirajuddeen Abdulaziz, said the call was to reawaken Muslim youths’ consciousness for active participation in politics.
He added that the summit had over 200 participants drawn from Islamic organisations from the country’s six geopolitical zones.
It discussed the Muslim-Muslim ticket and its attendant media hype, especially within the mainstream media and enlightened on their roles as responsible citizens towards nation-building, especially in electing credible and capable leaders.
“Muslim-Muslim ticket is a child of necessity; same faith ticket has for long been a norm in the state administration of this country. Christian-Muslim tickets at state administration have always been an exception,” stated the communique. “Same faith ticket is not new at the federal level as it started since the inception of the first Republic by Dr Nnamdi Azikwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the duo had fellow Christians as their running mate.”
The APC Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima has generated uproar within the ruling party and other sections of the country.
Mr Abdulaziz called on Muslims not just to practise the faith by appearance and names but by actions and engagement, urging “Muslims should go and collect their Permanent Voter Cards and be determined to vote wisely in the next general elections.”
He also called on elders of the Muslim community to engage the presidential candidates and be part of the electioneering process to avoid being sidelined when the governance finally kicked off.
“We must learn to identify our Muslim Icons so as to recommend their effort and celebrate them,” he added.
