Governor Diri while receiving Team Bayelsa that finished third at the Fiesta in front of the government house in Yenagoa on arrival from Benin City congratulated the State contingent for their Impressive outing in Edo.

The Governor said he was happy that the State athletes surpassed the 2006 record where they finished fourth in Abeokuta, Ogun State when he was Commissioner for Sports.

He explained that Team Bayelsa’s performance in Benin was indicative that the State has a comparative advantage in swimming, wrestling as well as combat sports.

While charging Team Bayelsa to aim for the first position during the 21st edition in Delta State next year, he pointed out that he expects the contingent to dominate in other areas as well.

Earlier, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Mr. Daniel Igali while thanking the Governor for his support towards the development of sports in Bayelsa State noted that the story of the 20th National Sports Festival was incomplete without Ifiezibe Gagbe who won 8 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

Peter Obi fumes over supporter’s alleged attack, arrest in Lagos

Peter Obi, a leading 2023 presidential candidate, has condemned an alleged attack on Labour Party supporters in Lagos State.

On Sunday in Oshodi, Lagos, a social media user named Obi Flag Boy is said to have been attacked.

Additionally, it was reported that a few party supporters had been detained prior to the rally on Saturday.

Obi reacted on Twitter by lambasting the assault and intimidation of the party members.

He emphasised that freedom of peaceful assembly and unrestricted electioneering are guaranteed by the constitution and urged security agencies to remind their agents to uphold civil liberties.

”Elections are not deemed free and fair when a certain group employs the tool of intimidation to ensure that the opposition is silenced, both at the campaigns and at the polls.

”Peaceful assembly and unfettered electioneering campaigns are constitutionally guaranteed. Both and other ordered liberties cannot be breached wilfully by security agents.

”Recent reports of OBIdients being silently arrested by some security agents is extremely disturbing and condemnable. We must ensure that everyone is given a level playing field in the forthcoming elections and that no eligible Nigerian, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, is disenfranchised, more so through violence and intimidation.

”I call on the Federal and State agencies to remind their operatives on the need to respect civil liberties,” he tweeted.
