Anglican church warns porous borders will threaten credible elections

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has urged the federal government to ensure strict border monitoring and control to prevent illegal migrants from interfering in the forthcoming general elections.

The church made the call in a communique signed by its dean, Ali Buba Lamido, and the current primate, Henry Ndukuba, at the end of the meeting of its committee.

“If issues of the country’s borders are not checked, the forthcoming general elections and census may be affected, and the consequences of this could be grave for National Security,” the communique said.

It said the measure was necessary to avoid foreigners being erroneously captured as Nigerians during the elections or the 2023 national census.

“Government should look into motivating and equipping

the law enforcement agencies for efficiency in the discharge of their responsibilities,” it said.

The communique added that the government should purge security agencies of the county’s enemies that allegedly infiltrated them.

It also canvassed for the amendment of sections 214 and 215 of the constitution to give more powers to states in handling security issues.

The church advised the federal government and ASUU to resolve their differences and reopen public universities.

It expressed concern about the state of the economy, including fast-depleting external reserves and double-digit inflation, and called for measures to shore up the economy.

The church called for “urgent and decisive actions” to stem kidnappings and ritual killings in the country, and

make the country liveable.

It said that the ugly trend of vote-buying and selling was ungodly and a cheap way to exploit the conscience of the poor.

The communique disagreed with the water sector reform bill before the National Assembly, saying it should be stepped down.

The church, however, commended the federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the recent improvements in the electoral process and called for its sustenance.

It resolved not to compromise its position on the true doctrine of Christianity, especially on human sexuality.

Elections not do-or-die affair – Gov Mohammed

Political parties, candidates, and supporters have been urged not to view elections for elective offices as a life-or-death situation by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Mohammed, who stated this in a goodwill message on the occasion of Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Anniversary celebration on Saturday, also urged political parties and supporters to play by the rules.

He asked them to bear in mind that “it is only God that gives power to whoever He likes at a point in time”.

“It is not therefore the amount of money, hate speech, fake news or political thuggery that would make contestants emerge victorious during the elections,” he said.

He further called on all and sundry to re-dedicate themselves to the country, be patriotic and intensify prayers to God to shower His mercy and blessings so as to continue to live in peace with one another.

“As we celebrate the 62nd Independence anniversary, we should reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of the founding fathers of this country and also strive to ensure that their labour shall not be in vain.

“It is gratifying to note that sixty-two years after independence, we have defeated the skepticism on our ability to govern ourselves.

“Today, we have shown to the world that we are not only able to govern ourselves, but are able to understand our differences, respect each other’s values and unite towards developing our country in spite of our diverse cultures,” the governor said.

According to him, as a responsible and responsive government, his administration had taken measures in collaborating with security agencies to protect the lives and property of the people of the state by swiftly addressing any form of security challenges.

He assured the citizenry that security would continue to top his priority to sustain the relative peace enjoyed in the state.

Mohammed added that his government had taken a multi-dimensional approach to all the development projects which had resulted in success, particularly in Infrastructure development.

“We have also executed several other projects in the areas of education, health, housing, agriculture, water, power supply and poverty alleviation.”

Presidential candidate of the APC Bola Tinubu says Nigeria must improve on governance to care for the sick, feed the hungry and create jobs for unemployed youth.

“We still have work to do in perfecting our form of governance such that government will always and completely be for, of, by and because of the people,” said Mr Tinubu in a statement released in his name to commemorate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary on Saturday.

“In seeking national improvement, we must join hands in growing the economy, creating jobs, feeding the hungry, educating our youth, caring for the sick and protecting our people and their way of life from evil and misguided foes who seek to destroy all that is good.”

The APC flag bearer is currently recuperating from fatigue in London, his associates claimed earlier as tongues wagged about his whereabouts and healthiness during the week.

A photo of Mr Tinubu with some associates in London was circulated to douse concerns but it stirred further controversy as the politician appeared to have an undercloth device believed to be a ‘catheter bag’ strapped to his weight and wet

Concerns about Mr Tinubu’s frail health and his feebleness to lead Africa’s most populous nation have remained rife, ahead of next year’s general elections.

Spokespeople for Mr Tinubu’s campaign did not return requests seeking comments about the protruding object under their principal’s clothes in London.
