Igbos will lead Nigeria after my tenure as president: Atiku

Atiku Abubakar

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, says he would help to actualise Igbo presidency if elected in 2023.

“Why do you say I will not give Igbos a fair chance to lead the country after my tenure as president,” Mr Abubakar said on Tuesday at a PDP South-East zonal stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu.

“I did that in 2019 when I brought Obi and another Obi in 2011 and for 2023 I chose Ifeanyi Okowa, another Igbo man as my running mate, even when Ohaneze said no Igbo should contest for presidency under PDP,” the former vice president added.

Mr Abubakar added, “My brothers and sisters, I don’t address you anymore as ladies and gentlemen but brothers and sisters, it is clear that you cannot fall my love for Igbo nation.”

The PDP candidate said he had supported people from the South-West, the North-West and the South-East to be president at different times.

He said there was the need to make the country attractive to make citizens stay and contribute their quota to its development.

Mr Abubakar said his administration, if elected, would equip the youths with the required skills and competences for a modern economy, and provide quality healthcare system.

Court nullifies PDP primaries in Ogun, orders fresh election

PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun state has been ordered by a Federal High Court in Abeokuta to conduct fresh primary election.

The presiding judge, Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, in his judgement nullified the elections held in May and ordered a fresh one to be held within the next 14 days.

Also, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was barred from recognising Ladi Adebutu as the gubernatorial flag bearer of the party in the 2023 election.

In the suit jointly filed by Jimi Lawal, Taiwo Olabode and Kehinde Akala, the trio had sought the court to declare the May 25 primary election null and void.

According to their argument, the PDP acted in bad faith by militarising the election venue and used an inauthentic list of delegates to carry out the process.

They also argued that the PDP electoral panel lacked the power to “unilaterally or arbitrarily impose” the delegates’ list for the primary process, since those on the list were not democratically chosen at the party’s ward, local government, and state congresses.

Mr Lawal, who is also a governorship aspirant, told Peoples Gazette that the party left the plaintiffs with no choice but to seek legal redress.

“They brought in soldiers to militarise the venue and used a fake list of delegates to achieve their aim. We had to go to court to upturn the malpractice,” he said. “The court has now ordered that a fresh primary be conducted and that the authentic list of delegates is used.”

Commenting on the judgement, counsel to the plaintiff, Thaddeus Idenyi, said “the PDP will have to put their hats together and then conduct a fresh primary as ordered by the court.

“This time around, the court was specific that they have to use the list that has been certified by INEC because after the primary, those lists were submitted to INEC as parts of its report of covering those ward congresses held, so the court has now said that is the list which must be considered in the conduct of the fresh primaries, so the PDP had to just put their house together and use those lists to conduct a fresh primary,” Mr Idenyi added.

Niger Assembly sacks state’s electoral commission chairman

The Niger State House of Assembly sacked the chairman of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, Baba Aminu, on Tuesday.

Malik Madaki (APC-Bosso) said the law establishing the electoral commission and Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution empowered the lawmakers to take the action.

Announcing the decision, speaker of the house, Abdullahi Bawa (APC-Tafa), said two-thirds of members voted in favour of Mr Aminu’s removal.

Mr Bawa said he was sacked for “his inability to discharge the functions of his office ranging from the inability of the mind and for misconduct”.

Earlier, Ahmed Bello (PDP-Agwara) moved the motion for Mr Aminu’s sack and was seconded by Binta Mamman (APC-Gurara).

The lawmakers had earlier invited Mr Aminu and the state’s attorney-general to appear before the house on September 22 to explain why preparations for local government elections had not been suspended despite their resolution.

They argued that the preparations should have been suspended since there was a pending matter in court about the exercise.

Mr Aminu honoured the invitation, telling the lawmakers that he was not answerable to them but his principal, the governor.

He stressed that he had not received any directive from his principal to suspend the exercise scheduled to hold in November.

Mr Aminu also said that he was aware of the pendency of a matter about the election in court but was yet to receive directives from his principal to suspend action.

He said N1 billion had already been approved for the conduct of the local government election but that the commission was yet to receive the fund.

In an earlier contribution, Aba Bala (APC-Borgu) said it was obvious that Mr Aminu’s loyalty was to his principal and expressed doubt that the chairman would be able to conduct free and fair elections.
