David Umahi: Tertiary education not for everybody

Published

on

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has pledged to abide by the peace pact he made with political opponents in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has said tertiary education is not meant for everybody.

Umahi made this assertion on Wednesday when he received a delegation from the Nigerian Police Trust Fund by Dr. Ben Akabueze, in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The governor noted that it is unreasonable for the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to borrow over ₦1 trillion to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Umahi’s assertion comes in the backdrop of the ongoing industrial action by lecturers at the nation’s varsities.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU strike has lasted for over five months and is still counting.

The chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum said education and security were the most challenging problems bedeviling Nigeria.

Umahi, who said Nigeria’s education’s system was not properly articulated, added that the basic education any nation strived to attain was secondary or vocational education.

He said, “Our basic problem in this country remains security, health and education. Let me say a little about education which is in our public domain and which is the ASUU. I think that our education system is not being properly articulated.

“University education is not for everybody and that is the truth. The basic education every country strives to attain is secondary school and vocational schools. These are the basic schools and when you have these qualifications, you will be able to use it either to start up something or to be able to use it to be employed,” he added.

The Lagos Division of the Federal High Court has restrained Peter Obi’s Labour Party (LP) and its supporters from using the Lekki Tollgate as a base to hold the ‘Obidatti23 Forward Ever Rally’.

This followed a lawsuit filed by a group of legal practitioners, who sought to halt the rally, specifically in Lagos, Nigeria’s most popular metropolitan city, to avoid a reminiscence of the #EndSARS protest in 2020.

The lawyers, through their lead counsel, Temilola Awosika, had filed a motion at the Federal High Court, asking that Mr Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, be barred from using the Lekki Tollgate for their rally.

They told the court that holding the rally would cause a breakdown of peace and will result in post-traumatic stress disorder for them and the public.

In the suit marked FHC/L/CS/1729/2022; Mr Obi, Labour Party, Mr Baba-Ahmed, the Inspector General of Police, police commissioner in Lagos, SSS director-general, Lekki Concession Company Limited, Lagos attorney-general and the governor of Lagos, were among those joined as defendants in the case.

Mr Obi’s supporters had fixed Friday, October 1, 2022, for the rally to draw support for their preferred candidate.

Ruling on Wednesday, Justice Daniel Osiagor asked the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Abiodun Alabi, to ensure compliance with the court order.

Mr Osiagor held that while Mr Obi’s supporters cannot stop at the Lekki toll gate, they can pass through the venue to access Falomo Bridge and other venues at which the rally plans to meet.

However, a preliminary objection filed by the defendants seeking to stop the court from hearing the motion on the grounds that it lacked jurisdiction could not be entertained.

The parties to the suit claimed they were yet to be served.

The Federal High Court later adjourned the hearing of the substantive suit to November 4, 2022.

Supporters of Mr Obi, who branded themselves as ‘Obidient’ have being holding rallies in Nigeria’s major towns, to garner support ahead of the 2023 general election.

Inspector General of Police Usman Baba says the police was working to sustain the improvements recorded in the conduct of security personnel at the Osun, Ekiti and Anambra off-cycle polls ahead of the 2023 general election.

Mr Baba, represented by DCP Basil Idegwu, the head of Police Federal Operation, said this at a security policy dialogue entitled “2022 General Election: Insecurity as a threat to constitutional succession”, organised by Cleen Foundation in partnership with Ford Foundation on Wednesday in Abuja.

“We have received great commendation both from international observers and local observers on the conduct and role of security agencies at the Ekiti and Osun election,” Mr Baba said. “This shows the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to ensure a credible election come 2023.”

He reassured that the police will work with sister security agencies to ensure peaceful conduct of the 2023 general election.

“However, it is imperative to note that in matters of security, every citizen is a stakeholder, and that is why this initiative organised to dialogue is highly commended because all hands must be on deck to ensure that the current insecurity is fought to stand still in the country,” he said.

Mr Baba said using the successes recorded in Edo, Ondo and Anambra elections, the police would ensure the peaceful conduct of the 2023 poll.

He said the police had implemented a series of training for its officers and men to strengthen the security response mechanism,

Gad Peter, Cleen Foundation executive director, urged the police and other security agencies to develop a comprehensive public safety and security roadmap toward the general election.

Mr Peter stated that the dialogue was necessitated by the growth in scale, spread and sophistication of violent threats in the country.

“Security threats such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, militancy, separatist agitation, farmer-herdsmen clashes, cultism, and proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW),” the CLEEN boss explained. “As well as threatening comments from some non-state armed groups, among others, have increased tension in the country and remain one of the greatest challenges in the build-up to the 2023 general elections if unaddressed.”

“Given the understandable propensity to read political meanings in public associations at this time of competition by political parties in the context of 2023 national elections, I wish to unequivocally state that nobody sought and obtained my agreement to be present at this particular book presentation.

“I have accepted the unreserved apologies rendered to me by the organizers of the event, and wish to reiterate that I remain non-partisan in praying that my country Nigeria will in 2023 elect people of proven competence and character whose sole mission will be to serve the national interests.”
