Wabara, BoT members in last-minute peace talks with Wike

Senator Adolphus Wabara, the chairman of the PDP’s board of trustees, has arrived at Government House in Port Harcourt, ostensibly to persuade Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, to lay down his gun and embrace peace for the benefit of the party.

Recall that the former vice president Atiku Abubakar won the presidential primary election and is now the flagbearer for the opposition PDP.

In an effort to win over Governor Wike, Wabara travelled with six additional party Board of Trustees members. Even though Wike has insisted that there would be no deal until the incumbent chairman, Iyiorcha Ayu, resigns.

The BoT’s meeting today is coming a few days after five of the PDP Governors, including Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Gabriel Ortom of Benue, Ayo Makinde of Oyo, Okezie Ikpazu of Abia, and Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu states met in Enugu to discuss on the issues affecting the party.

Wike has insisted that to create a balance in the party’s leadership structure, a southerner must take over as national chairman of the party.

The peace talk is being intensified by the Board of Trustees even as presidential campaigns kicked off last week, September 28, according to the guideline of the independent national electoral commission, INEC.

The BoT members who arrived at the Government House Port Harcourt at about 12:30 pm are expected to persuade Governor Wike and his loyalists to rescind their decision of shunning the party’s presidential campaign council.

Sanwo-Olu

With less than six months until the 2023 elections, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced an increase in salary for Lagos civil servants.

“Last month (September), I instructed the Head of Service, HoS, the Commissioner for Establishment, Training, and Pensions to work out modalities for a salary increase for the entire over 100,000 of public service workforce,” Mr Sanwo-Olu stated this on Tuesday.

Addressing a large crowd of workers at the Alausa office of the Head of Service in Ikeja, the governor stated that the ‘surprise’ announcement was coming at a time that the country and more importantly Lagos was preparing for the 2023 general election.

The Lagos governorship election will be held in March 2023, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with Mr Sanwo-Olu, first elected as the governor of Lagos in 2019, seeking a second term in office.

A total of 15 out of the 18 political parties are contesting the Lagos governorship election.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said his administration was aware of the inflation and high cost of living in the country but assured that he was determined to cushion the effects on the workers.

He added that Lagos was “capable” of paying workers high salaries, stressing that the state would continue to lead by example.

“In salary increments, we are leading again. We are going to reflect the popular ‘Buga’ slogan in the payment of salaries. We are not going to wait for the federal government’s minimum wage increase.

“We have commenced the process. I can assure that by early next year it will be ready for implementation,” the Lagos governor added, noting that, “We don’t want to wait for workers’ unions to hold us to ransom before we do the needful.”

Mr Sanwo-Olu also assured that his government would pay all the outstanding backlog of pensions to retirees by the end of this month.

He revealed that the state was clearing the entire backlog of pensions as they were liabilities met on the ground by his administration when it took over power.

“I want to reassure you that all the few outstanding backlogs of pensions will be sorted out this week and payment by the end of October. We are the highest and best paying in pensions in Nigeria,” Mr Sanwo-Olu added.

INEC removes Adebutu as Ogun PDP governorship candidate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed Oladipupo Adebutu from its list of candidates in the 2023 Ogun governorship election.

The entry for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate was vacant in the form sighted by Peoples Gazette on Tuesday.

INEC’s decision was in line with the ruling of Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, which nullified the primary election of PDP held in May.

The ruling nullified the candidacy of Mr Adebutu, who had to recontest the ticket. Delivered on September 30, the ruling barred INEC from recognising Mr Adebutu as PDP’s candidate and instructed the party to conduct another primary election within 14 days.

The suit was filed by displeased members of the party, Jim Lawal, Taiwo Olabode and Kehinde Akala. The trio accused the party of imposing a fake list of delegates at the venue of the primary election and also intimidating party members with the military.

“They brought in soldiers to militarise the venue and used a fake list of delegates to achieve their aim. We had to go to court to upturn the malpractice,” Mr Lawal said.

The PDP is yet to announce dates for the rerun of the primary election.
