Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo of Bayelsa has urged religious leaders to preach harmony and shun extremism.

Mr Ewhrudjakpo spoke in Yenagoa when the Association of South-South Muslim Ummah of Nigeria visited him.

The deputy governor identified religious intolerance as a major cause of the insecurity and conflict in some parts of the country.

”The situation has led to the destruction of lives and property. It has also affected development. This is not good. We have to live as one. We need to avoid religious fanatism and extremism. We should have respect for life. We are one people,” he said.

Mr Ewhrudjakpo said it was worrisome that Nigeria was rated low globally regarding religious tolerance. He added that it was the duty of religious leaders to preach peace, tolerance and unity among Nigerians.

He said Governor Douye Diri’s administration would continue providing an enabling environment for religious tolerance to thrive. The deputy governor added that the Bayelsa government would not discriminate between religious groups for any reason.

The leader of the delegation, Nasir Uhor, commended the government for its commitment to fostering harmony among religious groups.

He urged the state government to create a separate pilgrims board for the Muslim Ummah in Bayelsa. According to him, such a move would enthrone efficiency in managing pilgrimage activities in the state.

APC chairman writes Tinubu, accuses candidate of betrayal

APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu and Bola Tinubu

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Adamu has accused the party’s presidential flag-bearer, Bola Tinubu, of betraying the shared agreement on the appointment of members of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

In a letter written on behalf of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Mr Tinubu was accused of hand-picking members of the PCC without consultation or approval from the NWC.

The party chairman claims that Mr Tinubu’s behaviour demonstrates his lack of clear understanding of the distinct functions and responsibilities of the key organs of the party.

The letter read in part: “Your Excellency will no doubt recall our meetings in my office and also at the NWC Conference Room at the Party’s National Secretariat, on Wednesday, 7th September 2022, during which we discussed the details of the Organogram of the PCC and its composition, as a collaborative project between the two entities.

“Our recollection of those meetings clearly leaves us in no doubt that a breach of agreement has occurred and that a return to the principles of cooperation and respect for each other is required.

“In Your Excellency’s own words, which I take the liberty to quote here, which I also hold dearly, you stated that “there is a burden on everyone’s shoulders towards delivering the elections to the Party and the candidate”. This has been the view of the NWC and myself all along since Your Excellency’s emergence as our Great Party’s Flagbearer.”

While urging Mr Tinubu to respect “established boundaries” and imbibe transparency, Mr Adamu tasked the former Lagos governor to restrain the PCC from further embarking on “solo projects.”

“May I, therefore, point out to Your Excellency, that winning election is a cooperative as well as a collaborative effort, that is done in a transparent and disinterested manner by all parties concerned, by respecting established boundaries and acknowledging the contributions of everyone.

“The NWC believes that any sign of disarray in the Party’s ranks will undermine the spirit and ethos of the campaign and give the undue alarm to faithful members and followers of the Party across the country.

“Without further admonishment or complaints, I wish hereby to call upon Your Excellency to restrain the PCC from undertaking solo projects of this nature and agree to work with all stakeholders towards taking our Party to victory.

“I shall not find it necessary to reiterate the importance of the Party in the overall scheme of things in these campaigns and the singular position of the NWC in driving the process towards our securing of victory in the polls,” the chairman added.

INEC sets date to release final lists of presidential, governorship aspirants

Mr Tinubu unveiled a long PCC list last Friday, consisting of 422 members with President Muhammadu Buhari as chairman, himself and national chairman Adamu as co-deputy chairmen. The council also has on it several ex-military leaders, APC governors, lawmakers, and Nollywood actors.

Enugu traditional rulers endorse, present PDP guber candidate with ‘Ofo’

Peter Mbah

The Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers has presented ‘Ofo’, a traditional symbol of authority, to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Peter Mbah.

The traditional rulers also jointly prayed for him at a consultative meeting between them and Mr Mbah’s campaign group on Wednesday in Enugu.

The chairman of the council, Lawrence Agubuzu, said Mr Mbah had demonstrated his “great respect” for the traditional institution by holding a consultative meeting with the members.

“By deciding to hold the consultative meeting, Mbah recognises that the bedrock of democracy is the people at the grassroots who are subjects of the traditional rulers,” Mr Agubuzu said.

He recalled a March 2022 meeting where the traditional rulers discussed the rotation of power to the Enugu East Senatorial District.

“The emergence of Hon. Peter Mbah as the gubernatorial candidate of PDP is in keeping with the rotational principle advocated in our earlier communique,” he said.

Mr Agubuzu also implored his colleagues to pray for his protection and to wish him success through “our joint presentation of ‘ofo’ to him”.

“As traditional rulers, we must remain absolutely non-partisan in politics while advising our subjects to vote wisely for leaders who would bring peace, security, development and prosperity to our state and country,” he said.

Responding, Mr Mbah expressed gratitude to the traditional rulers for the prayers and handing of the collective ‘ofo’ to him, adding, “the great value I attach to what you have done to me today cannot be lost by me”.

“My virtues will represent and symbolise what you have done today. If the Almighty God answers our prayers and I become your governor, I will not abandon you.

“What you have done shows what our ancestors in the state want, as you people are close to them, and you are the sole custodian of our culture and tradition,” he said.

Mr Mbah also assured the traditional rulers that he would run a people-focused and development-focused administration when elected, adding that he would continue on the trajectory of rural community development, “in which Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had excelled”.

The PDP candidate also appealed to the traditional rulers to take the message home to their subjects that they had found who would deliver their development message and give them peace and security as well.
