Afenifere: Nigerian government has ceded country to terrorists

Published

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, declared that the infiltration of Nigeria by bandits has shown a failure of the Federal Government.

Naija News Today

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has described the handling of security situation by the Federal Government as tantamount to ceding the country to terrorists.

It stressed that the government’s insensitivity to the killings and kidnapping across the country makes Nigerians to live in fear.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Comrade Jare Ajayi, on Monday noted that the confession by President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, that terrorists ‘deceived’ the government into releasing their commander’s wife and children without releasing victims of Abuja-Kaduna train as very unfortunate and an admission of failure on the part of the government.

The statement read, “In view of the fact that government is expected to possess superior power in virtually everything than others in a country, considering the fact that the primary responsibility of the government is the provision of security and welfare for the people.

“The fact that the present administration has failed to provide either security or welfare for the people of Nigeria in recent times, one may not be wrong to state that President Buhari’s government greatly lost the confidence, trust and hope that were invested in it at inception. It is a pity”.

According to Afenifere, it would be recalled that Mallam Garba Shehu, on Friday, stated that the commander of the terrorist group requested that the government should release his pregnant wife, which was done.

The statement added, “The government even took her to the hospital for safe delivery and she was delivered of twins.

“The government went further to show him his wife and the twins so that he would believe and see that the mother and the babies were in good condition.

“We then handed over his family to his parents. Unfortunately, after all this, he failed to honour the agreement reached. We were deceived.”

The organisation noted that the aspect of the ‘agreement’ alluded to by Shehu, according to reports, was the release of the remaining Abuja-Kaduna train passengers who were kidnapped earlier.

“By the way, what about other people kidnapped from other places?” Afenifere asked.

“The British Broadcasting Corporation (Hausa Service) that broadcast Garba’s interview reported that this was not the first time the terrorists had failed to honour such agreements.

But it was the first time the Federal Government informed the world of such dealings with the terrorists.”

According to Afenifere, what came out of Shehu’s disclosures confirmed a suspicion and allegation that have been in the public domain for a long time, to wit: that government not only knows the terrorists, it is aware of where they are! “Why the government refuses to confront them and put an end to the needless loses and agonies of Nigerians is a riddle that one finds difficult to unravel”.

According to the socio-political organisation, the action of the government in that respect can be likened to that of a father who does not frown at, perhaps allows or encourages bandits not only to come into his household to rape his daughters but also to haul his sons into bondage.

“Sometimes, he even allows his wife to be abused by the invading bandits. Such is confounding and can hardly be explained or rationalised through any theory”.

The organisation maintained that the manner insecurity issue is being handled is unfortunately lending credence to the views of those who are alleging that there could be a hidden agenda to this issue of banditry, kidnapping and terrorism, “otherwise, the government would have been more decisive in the way it tackles the monster that is fast eroding the very essence of our being.”

Regretting the level to which insecurity, terrorism, kidnapping and needless loss of precious lives have degenerated in the country, Afenifere said that killings of students and others in the South-West as well as other parts of the country are very troubling and disturbing to them and in Yorubaland as a whole as other well-meaning Nigerians.

“News had it at the weekend that a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Miss Happiness Odeh, who was kidnapped on Thursday was reportedly raped and killed by her dastard abductors.

The National Diploma Two student was on August 3, 2022, crowned as a beauty queen of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta. The unfortunate incident was reported to have happened on her way to a film location in Ipara Remo area of Ogun State.

“The week before, a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Miss Racheal Opadele, was brutally killed by her kidnappers even after ransoms were paid for her release and others with whom she was kidnapped.

Earlier on in June, several lives were brutally cut short by terrorists during a church service in Owo, Ondo State.

“Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, lately revealed that bushes in Yorubaland have been infiltrated by terrorists with the intention of unleashing terror in the area any time.

Going by reports coming from other parts of the country, what is said of the South-West is not peculiar.

Indeed, Kaduna State Governor El Rufai stated last week that terrorists have formed a parallel government in his state.

His Benue State counterpart, Governor Samuel Ortom, has actually set up what can be practically called a state police because of the failure to get necessary reliance from the Federal Government-owned security agencies.

Some territories in states like Niger, Sokoto, Nassarawa, Borno including the president’s home state of Katsina are reportedly under the control of some bandits who are demanding taxes from the people in these communities.

“Reports on Sunday also had it that at least 13 persons were killed and many wounded during a bandits’ attack in Karekuka, a community in Gassol Local Government Area, Taraba State.

“They also attacked Garin Gidado community in the same area on Saturday morning but met it empty, because the community had been previously attacked by bandits,” the statement further reads.

2023: Anambra bans campaign posters in public places

Naija News Today

Nigeria is witnessing a progressive decimation of terrorists and insurgents in order to secure the country, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said

The Minister made the remarks in Calabar at a joint press conference with Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, during a ceremony to mark the 2022 World Tourism Day.

He said infrastructure and adequate security are necessary for tourism to thrive.

“I am bold to say here that in the last three months, even our worst critics will agree that the government has gotten the handle on security issues. In the area of insecurity, I want to assure you that the worst is over,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

He said when the situation in the country in 2015 is compared with what obtains in 2022, there is incontrovertible evidence to support the government’s position that the worst is over.

“It’s unfortunate that people who comment on insecurity fail to start from where we were in 2015 and where we are today.

“In 2015, the entire North East of the country was a no-go area. When I was appointed Minister in 2015, one of the first tasks I embarked upon was to go with a team of foreign and local journalists to the North East, in particular to Maiduguri, Kaure, Konduga and Bama, to see firsthand the effect of Boko Haram insurgency

“That’s on 5th December 2015 and I needed air force jets to escort me from Maiduguri to Bama, which is about 68 kilometers. Apart from our convoy, we didn’t see any other vehicular traffic on the road. All the houses in Bama were destroyed by Boko Haram. There were no schools in the North East and no hospitals. Telecom services were destroyed,” the Minister said.

He said at the moment, the North East is once again accessible because of the government’s efforts.

On the economy, Alhaji Mohammed said the activities of vandals in the Niger Delta is causing the government to lose about 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, thereby denying the government huge revenue and foreign exchange.

He however expressed delight that the renewed deployment of technology and the synergy between government security forces and private security companies have achieved success in the fight against oil bunkering.

Kayode Ajulo, a constitutional lawyer has warned Nigerian politicians and political parties against disobeying the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 during campaigns ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Mr Ajulo reminded candidates stated that the Electoral Act placed restrictions  been placed to prevent the usual electoral malpractices that start even from the period of the campaign.

“Section 92 of the Electoral Act, 2022, provides for prohibition of certain conduct at political campaigns,” he noted.

Mr Ajulo explained that a political campaign or slogan should not be tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.

According to him, abusive, intemperate, slanderous or bias language or insinuations or innuendoes designed or likely to provoke violent reaction or emotions should not be used in political campaigns.

He said places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices should not be used for political campaigns.

“By the above provision prohibiting the use of public offices for election campaigns, it is safe to submit that palaces of our traditional rulers that are maintained with public funds are categorised as public offices,” he stated.

The lawyer said a credible election remained the basis for conferring legitimacy on any government in a democratic dispensation.

Section 92(3) of the act says, “Places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices shall not be used for political campaigns, rallies and processions; or to promote, propagate or attack political parties, candidates or their programmes or ideologies.”
