Italian clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan have agreed to demolish the iconic Giuseppe Meazza stadium that they both share to pave the way for a new homeground.

Multiple outlets reported on Tuesday that the Serie A giants have reached an agreement to completely overhaul the commonly known San Siro for the construction of a modern stadium called ‘The Cathedral’ and that would be ready by 2027.

It was initially intended that some elements of the current stadium will not be touched to accommodate the new stadium but the plans have changed now as ‘The Cathedral’ will be built on the exact site of the San Siro in a project estimated to cost up to £1 billion.

San Siro is owned by the Municipality of Milan that has a capacity to accommodate a maximum of 80,018 people at once.

The stadium has been home to AC Milan and Inter for the past 75 years and it is also home to the Italian national team for some selected matches.

Some legendary musicians including Bob Marley and The Wailers, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Madonna and other popular artists have all held concerts at the stadium.

The stadium has also hosted other sports including boxing and a rugby union match between Italy and New Zealand in which 80,000 people were in attendance.

Most importantly, San Siro will hold the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, with the demolition of the iconic stadium set for after hosting the event.

Djokovic complains about nagging wrist, eyes ATP Finals

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic on Monday said he was bothered by a wrist problem during the Laver Cup in London, and his lengthy absence from the Tour recently could be the reason.

“I have been struggling with my right wrist for the last four, five days, to be honest. I have been keeping it under control,” Djokovic told reporters.

The three-day tournament in London’s O2 Arena was Djokovic’s first event since the Serb won his 21st Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon in early July.

He had missed the North American hardcourt swing and the U.S. Open due to COVID-19 vaccination.

But he produced a dazzling performance on his return to the Tour on Saturday by winning his singles and doubles matches.

However, he lost to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime on the final day of the competition on Sunday.

“The two matches of Saturday probably had an effect. Sunday was not easy. I couldn’t serve as fast or as accurately as I would like to. That has affected the whole game,” he said.

Djokovic said qualifying for November’s ATP Finals in Turin remained his goal.

He will play a tournament in Tel Aviv this week, followed by an event in Kazakhstan next week and then the Paris Masters at the end of October.

His Wimbledon victory guarantees him a spot in the Tour-ending finals if he remains ranked in the world’s top 20.

Djokovic, currently ranked seventh, said the wrist issue could be due to a combination of factors.

“Could be (the effect of) not playing matches almost three months, and then conditions here are such that the balls are really big and slow,” he said. “You always have to generate a lot of wrist action and speed, which could be the case why I have been feeling soreness.”

They were to play against hosts La Passe FC of Seychelles.

After the conclusion of the preliminary first-round matches, their case was brought before the committee, which went on to apply the competition’s regulations, basing its decision on Article IX 10.5.

The Katsina United FC management has invited 120 indigenous players across 34 local government areas of Katsina for a talent hunt and screening.

Club’s spokesman Nasir Gide disclosed this in a statement. According to him, the screening will be held between September 28 and October 6 at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium Katsina.

The invited players are expected to arrive at the venue by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

“The exercise is meant to revamp the team and also to give more chances and playing time to the home-based players,” said the statement.

The club’s director of football development, Saleh Yusuf, said the players’ slot depended on active football teams in the local government areas.

“Katsina local government, being the centre, carried 20 slots with some of the players from the Junior Katsina United FC. The director stated that feeding and accommodations will be provided to all the invited players,” the club explained.

It added, “The invited players are therefore urged to exhibit sportsmanship and discipline during the screening and assured that fairness and just consideration will be done to whoever deserves to be registered with the club.”

The club thanked Bishir Gambo-Saulawa, the sports commissioner, for giving the state home-based players a chance to exhibit their talents.
