2023 Presidency: ‘Most Igbo aspirants are not clean’ - Naija News 247

Third Republic Senate President and a member of the National Caucus of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Ameh Ebute, has described Igbo presidential aspirants like Anyim Pius Anyim, Orji Uzor Kalu and others as politicians who are not truly clean because they are contesting one allegation or the other.

Naija News 247 reports that Ebute made this disclosure in a recent interview with Vanguard. He insisted that his party, the APC, needs people who are “clean” to contest for the 2023 presidency.

“Now, the presidency is open to all but you see the number of Igbo that have shown interest. You have Okorocha (Rochas), tell me how he can become president? There is Orji Uzor Kalu that has just been freed by the Supreme Court on technical grounds. You have Umahi (Dave), the present governor of Ebonyi State. That one I don’t know about his records. But look at Okorocha and Uzor Kalu. Yes, there are others. Pius Anyim. Pius Anyim has a problem too. We want clean people,” the elder statesman said.

Inspector General of Police Usman Baba says the police was working to sustain the improvements recorded in the conduct of security personnel at the Osun, Ekiti and Anambra off-cycle polls ahead of the 2023 general election.

Mr Baba, represented by DCP Basil Idegwu, the head of Police Federal Operation, said this at a security policy dialogue entitled “2022 General Election: Insecurity as a threat to constitutional succession”, organised by Cleen Foundation in partnership with Ford Foundation on Wednesday in Abuja.

“We have received great commendation both from international observers and local observers on the conduct and role of security agencies at the Ekiti and Osun election,” Mr Baba said. “This shows the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to ensure a credible election come 2023.”

He reassured that the police will work with sister security agencies to ensure peaceful conduct of the 2023 general election.

“However, it is imperative to note that in matters of security, every citizen is a stakeholder, and that is why this initiative organised to dialogue is highly commended because all hands must be on deck to ensure that the current insecurity is fought to stand still in the country,” he said.

Mr Baba said using the successes recorded in Edo, Ondo and Anambra elections, the police would ensure the peaceful conduct of the 2023 poll.

He said the police had implemented a series of training for its officers and men to strengthen the security response mechanism,

Gad Peter, Cleen Foundation executive director, urged the police and other security agencies to develop a comprehensive public safety and security roadmap toward the general election.

Mr Peter stated that the dialogue was necessitated by the growth in scale, spread and sophistication of violent threats in the country.

“Security threats such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, militancy, separatist agitation, farmer-herdsmen clashes, cultism, and proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW),” the CLEEN boss explained. “As well as threatening comments from some non-state armed groups, among others, have increased tension in the country and remain one of the greatest challenges in the build-up to the 2023 general elections if unaddressed.”

Kayode Ajulo, a constitutional lawyer has warned Nigerian politicians and political parties against disobeying the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 during campaigns ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Mr Ajulo reminded candidates stated that the Electoral Act placed restrictions  been placed to prevent the usual electoral malpractices that start even from the period of the campaign.

“Section 92 of the Electoral Act, 2022, provides for prohibition of certain conduct at political campaigns,” he noted.

Mr Ajulo explained that a political campaign or slogan should not be tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.

According to him, abusive, intemperate, slanderous or bias language or insinuations or innuendoes designed or likely to provoke violent reaction or emotions should not be used in political campaigns.

He said places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices should not be used for political campaigns.

“By the above provision prohibiting the use of public offices for election campaigns, it is safe to submit that palaces of our traditional rulers that are maintained with public funds are categorised as public offices,” he stated.

The lawyer said a credible election remained the basis for conferring legitimacy on any government in a democratic dispensation.

Section 92(3) of the act says, “Places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices shall not be used for political campaigns, rallies and processions; or to promote, propagate or attack political parties, candidates or their programmes or ideologies.”
